In the grounds of what was the Inebriates Retreat at Belair (now St Johns Grammar School, 29 Gloucester Street, Belair) are the graves of the first two wives Gustave Adolphus Ludewigs.
Both wives are listed on the Mitcham St Michaels Church of England burial register. This is a Church BR as well as those buried in cemetery. Marie Helena died 23-9-1861 bd. 25-9-1861. Plot unknown. Of Belair Annie died 9-4-1863 bd. 11-4-1863. Plot unknown. Of Belair

Maria Eleanora Helena LUDEWIGS nee GRETSHALL born 1813 in Belair, Martinique, West Indies Married St George Hanover Square London on 6 August 1848 Gustav Adolp LUDEWIGS b. 1818 Frankfurt, Germany They arrived Adelaide on “Psyche” on 16 January 1849. Maria Eleanora Helena died 23 rd September 1861 at their home Belair South Australia and was buried close to the house.
2 nd Wife Annie Paddock , daughter of Richard Paddock married 28-6-1862 aged 25 y(b. 23 October 1835 Ellesmere Shropshire England) died 9-4-1863 26 y Belair SA died in childbirth she was buried alongside the first wife.
3 rd Wife Elizabeth Paddock 26 y married 15-7-1863 Adelaide . Elizabeth married again after Gustav's death to John THOMAS 18-9-1876 at the Residence of Rev JGH Doost Rosenthal. Gustave died 21-10-1869 51 y at Wallaroo buried Wallaroo |
