Hans Smidt Born Bornholm Denmark

Died Esperance Western Australia between March 13th – 15th   1896 Aged 59

News Paper Articles.

Referring to the death by drowning announced in our Esperance telegram a few days ago of Hans Smidt formally well known at port Adelaide as captain of the Grace Darling and other vessels,Mr Robert Sayers in a letter dated from Broken Hill, states that he knew the deceased longer than anyone else in south Australia, the acquaintances dating back to as far as 1854.Our correspondent then belonged to the HMS Cruiser which during the Crimean war was blockading Riga and the adjacent ports.Smidt was in a Danish Vessel which was captured by HMS Cruiser in attempting to run the blockade.

With the remainder of the crew he was taken aboard the British warship but was subsequently liberated and our correspondent lost sight of him till 18 years ago, when the acquaintance was renewed at port Adelaide.

On many occasions subsequently they exchanged recollections. Mr Sayers regards it as somewhat singular that smidt should have met with a violent end after the many perils he had escaped.

Caught near Flinders Island by Captain Smidt of the Grace Darling Schooner a fine specimen of the carpet shark 6ft 4in long, has been presented to the port Adelaide museum by Mr T Henning

Feats of Strength

Captain Tulloch to whom I referred the other day must have been a strong man.

Yesterday Mr William Tulloch told me that his Father once carried two bags of flour from the beach landing at Fowlers bay up to the old homestead at the foot of the sand hills.

About 50 years ago when I was in Elder smiths he said’ Captain Smidt was ion my fathers schooner Grace Darling. The driver of a trolley, carting wool from the west coast asked the clerk at the scales what was the weight of a certain bale of wool.

Learning that it was 7 cwt., the driver explained that the schooners crew wanted to know because Captain Smidt had carried it from the seaweed to the boat. Captain Smidt was drowned at Esperance Bay.

A man at wollomai. Tug o war Johannsen carried a case of galvanised iron ashore at one of the west Coast bays’

Boating Accident

Two south Australians drowned

Esperance March 15 1896

A sad calamity has plunged the whole of the community into a state of sorrow. News was brought to town late last night by a young man named Hannott that two bodies were lying on the beach beyond Rossiter Bay .The police were despatched and returned this morning with the bodies, which were identified as Captain Hans Smidt on of the best known master mariners at Port Adelaide, and his assistant Henry Manning a young fellow from Corydon South Australia. Captain Smidt arrived a few weeks ago from Adelaide at the head of a prospecting party to search the island along the coast for gold. A reef was found and opened and they despatched seven bags of stone to Adelaide. On Friday morning Captain Smidt and Manning put off in a 14ft open boat to proceed to the Island to develop the property. The weather was fine but a strong southerly prevailed. Nothing further was heard of the men until their bodies were found a quarter of a mile apart on the other side of Rossiter Bay about 8 miles down the coast. The police saw the boat Keel Upwards, 400 yds from the shore in deep water. The tackle etc, was washed ashore and they found some cloths.Mannings body and face presented a shocking spectacle

‘A sad calamity has plunged the whole of the community into a state of sorrow. News was brought to town last night by a young man named Hannott that two bodies were lying on the beach beyond Rossiter Bay. The Police were despatched, and returned this morning with the bodies, which were identified as Captain Hans Smidt, one of the best known master mariners at Port Adelaide, and his assistant, Henry Manning, a young fellow from Croyden, South Australia. Captain Smidt arrived a few weeks ago from Adelaide at the head of a prospecting party to search the island along the coast for gold. A reef was found and opened, and they despatched several bags of stone to Adelaide. On Friday morning Captain Smidt and Manning put off in a 14ft. ft. open boat to proceed to the island to develop the property. The weather was fine but a strong southerly wind prevailed.Nothing further was heard of the  men  unil their bodies were found a quarter of a mile apart on the other side of Rossiter Bay, about eight miles down the coast. The  police saw the boat, keel upwards, 400 yards from the shore in deep water. The tackle, etc.,was ashed ashore, and they found some cloths.Manning’s body and face presented a shocking spectacle.

It is surmised that the boat capsized in making for shelter, as the craft is held fast by the anchor .The men evidently  tried to swim  ashore , both being good swimmers , but  they got into broken water , which here extends to 200yards, and , being exhausted, were drowned in the surf. The body of Manning was unclothed, while the body of the captain had the trousers and shirt on.

Captain Smidt was about sixty years of age. He had been  trading for about thirty five years between Adelaide and the west coast and was a most successful navigator. He had charge of the Helen Nicoll on her first trip to Esperance, and also had command at different times of the Freebridge, Grace Darling Meeinderry and other vessels. He leaves   a family. The sad spectacle of three funerals was witnessed in Esperance today, the other being that of Paddy McCarthy, of Goulburn, who died suddenly on Saturday from inflammation of the lungs’.

NB: Neither Henry Manning or Paddy McCarthy are listed as being buried @ Esperance on any Shire Records I was given but the above notice in the paper of the day certainly suggests all three men where buried there.

SPURLING, Noel.
20.09.2007
A year has gone so quickly,
always in my heart and my thoughts.
Love always Debbie.
Dad, can't believe it's been a year already.
It seems only yesterday you were still here
with us. Missing you always.
Love Melissa and Zane.
Dear Dad, thinking of you every day.
Missing you always.
Love Justin and Allysha.
Not a day goes by without remembering
you Dad, you were always so kind,
caring and devoted to our family.
You're forever in my heart, miss you always.
With Love Raquel.
