In The Inquirer dated 26/02/1879
“Canning February 18th. A man named George Barber, in the employ of Messrs Mason, Bird & Co., was found dead in the bush by one of his children about 3 o’clock last Saturday afternoon. The lower part of the poor fellow’s body was completely consumed. It is supposed he had a fit, to which he was subject, and fell into the fire. An inquest was held upon the body by Mr. Loftie, the Police Magistrate, on Sunday, the jury consisting of some neighbours, Messrs Moyns, Stevenson & Thompson, who recorded a verdict to the effect that the deceased met his death by accident, the cause of which was not altogether clear. The body was interred in the Canning Cemetery, the service being read by the Rev. T. C. Laurence, who was happily on a visit to the Canning, and on hearing of the accident awaiting the burial. Barber leaves a family of 4 daughters and one son.”

BROWNE, William Walter (alias Walter Brett)
1866 aged 41 years
Death Reg: 3140/66
In the Inquirer dated 25/04/1866
“An inquest was held on Sunday morning at the Narrogin Inn, on the body of Mr. William Walter Browne, alias Walter Brett who died under somewhat suspicious circumstances at his residence, Woongong. Mr. G. W. Leake acted as Coroner and impaneled a jury, comprising Captain Harwood, foreman and Messrs T. Saw & J. Poulton and Ferguson, after whose evidence was received, and that of a few other witnesses, the jury came to the conclusion that the deceased came by his death from the effects of a large dose of laudanum, supposed to have been administered by himself; but whether taken as a sedative for the purposed of procuring sleep, or an as instrument of self-destruction, they were unable to form an opinion, from the want of sufficient evidence. It is almost beyond a doubt that the deceased for some days before his death suffered from the deepest depression of spirits, and was the object of great irritability owing, it is supposed, to great embarrassment in pecuniary affairs, subsequently to the arrival of the two last English mails. The body was conveyed to the new Canning Cemetery, and interred on Sunday afternoon.”

From the Mining Journal:
DEATH OF MR JAMES McDONALD
“There died at Cannington, on Tuesday last, a gentleman who has had probably more to do with the settlement of the goldfields of Western Australia, and in the actual pioneering work that has been done in connection with them that any man in this colony. We refer to Mr. James McDonald, the originator of the system of condensing now in use, and which has proved such a boon to the fields. Mr. McDonald might truly claim to be a pioneer; he was, in fact, a pioneer of the pioneers, inasmuch as the greater portion of his life was devoted to the work of exploration and opening up new territories. He came to this colony some twelve years ago, and entered into it in a fashion peculiarly his own, inasmuch as he left Townsville, in Northern Queensland, accompanied by a black boy, and with a mob of horses in charge, traveled right across the continent to Halls Creek, in the Kimberley district of this colony, a journey which occupied nine months and during the course of which he never saw a white man. This was only one of the hazardous trips Mr. McDonald undertook during his life, and he was particularly fond of opening up all the new territory at different times within the known auriferous area. He was among the first to arrive on the different fields, and his knowledge of pioneer prospecting not only stood him in good stead, but it was of great assistance to those who were among the early arrivals. Mr. McDonald held extensive mining interests in several of the centres and had his headquarters at Kalgoorlie, where he conducted a big condensing works in the principal Street on the water right, which has latterly become famous because of the attempts on the part of the government to deprive him of his title, and to repudiate the action of the Warden of that field. Deceased took ill some two months ago with inflammation of the lungs, followed with goldfields fever. His life was despaired of on several occasions in Kalgoorlie, but he recovered sufficiently to enable him to proceed to Perth; under the belief that the change of scene and climate would assist towards his recovery. He took up his residence at Cannington, where he was attended by Dr. Cuthbert in consultation with Dr. Astles, but though apparently a little better for some time, he caught a cold and suffered a relapse, which resulted in his death, as stated, on Tuesday afternoon. The remains were interred in the Church of England Cemetery at Cannington on Wednesday afternoon. Among those present being several of his old mates and colleagues in the pioneering days. The pallbearers were Messrs C. J. Moran MLA, H. C. Rhys-Jones, C. J. Hatrick, David Rogers, J. Baird and J. Baker. The coffin was covered by a number of exceedingly beautiful wreaths and floral emblems sent by friends of the deceased from different parts of the colony. The funeral service arrangements were satisfactorily carried out by Mr. D. J. Chipper. The deceased leaves a wife and three children, who, it is understood are well provided for.”
